Strange Coincidences. What Goes Around Comes Around.
‘Karma will sort you out!’
Have you ever said that to someone? It’s usually uttered (or muttered) just after a bad deed has been done. Have you ever known some strange coincidences to follow afterwards?
Karma swings both ways you know. Wishing your worst enemy some cosmic payback is nice but it also draws negative karma your way for doing so. There’s no escaping the clutches of karma no matter how virtuous you see yourself to be. Such explains the strange coincidences in the following story.
When writing SEETHINGS I came across one of these strange coincidences – a most unusual story of a woman who’d recently become separated from her common-law husband. It was a real story, one I was part of and saw unfold before my eyes. It was so extraordinary I had to include it into my book’s narrative.
Unfortunately, one of my earliest readers didn’t believe me and told me to remove it. It had to do with the mountain you see pictured below. I’ll tell you the story and see what you think.
Strange Coincidences – Part 1
This mountain is part of a line of others known as the Great Dividing Range – a range which crosses three states. This one is not particularly high but, due to the relatively low landscape to the north of it, it can be seen from a distance. It’s a feature for many homeowners who live north of it. This is where the our strange coincidences begin.
Then a woman had an argument with her husband.
It was a bitter afternoon.
The police had to separate them.
This feisty woman scooped the baby up and left their home with just a few things in her car. She accused him of doing them wrong and, when the dust settled, she decided to build a brand new home with the proceeds of her payout – one she believed fell far short of his philandering crimes.
She found a house plot not far from this mountain. One of her requests was to build her new home so that the living room window would face it. She didn’t know the name of the bump out there but it was to be a feature – a symbol of her freedom.
While the house was being built, she and that bastard battled in the courts over custody of their baby. HE wanted access and SHE didn’t. To keep HIM from HER she told the judge a few lies. She said he was a violent man… but he wasn’t. She got sole custody and wished karma to bite him on the ass for the rest.
Strange Coincidences – Finale
The home was finished and this single mother and her child moved into a freshly painted, untouched home. And then I visited her to do research for the book on something totally unrelated.
“Do you know the name of that mountain?” She asked, opening the curtain to expose the scene beyond the large glass window.
“Sure, it’s Mount Lindesay.”
I heard a loud gasp and then the curtain was snapped shut in horror. The mountain’s name was the same as her former husband’s!
Think about it: There must have been plenty of strange coincidences occur for that mountain and her home to come to such a point. Any break in the chain would’ve altered the outcome and this wouldn’t have happened. She is now left with a constant reminder of the man she’d grown to hate right outside her main window!
And the woman is stuck living there. She now lives in a darkened living room with the curtains permanently drawn!
‘Forman’s writing style is artful, with the protagonist Mitchell’s warped thought processes masterfully exposed. The author has a powerful and vivid command of language and his word pictures are stark and disturbingly real.’ – Linda J Bettenay, author of ‘Secrets Mothers Keep’ and ‘Wishes For Starlight’
